Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards, Ukhozi FM presenter, and preacher, passed away on Monday after battling cancer. She was 52 years old and was described as “a pioneer of the arts.”

Mbokazi-Nkambule reportedly fell ill in April of this year and underwent surgery after struggling with breathing difficulties. Earlier this year, various gospel artists and preachers hosted a prayer for her recovery at the Assemblies of God Church in Sandton.

Her husband, Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule, explained that they were providing information to the public to counteract the speculation. He revealed that Zanele fell ill while at work and lost her voice. They took her to the hospital for an examination, where it was discovered that she had lung cancer.

Nkambule started the Crown Gospel Music Awards to celebrate gospel artists and gospel music in South Africa. In an interview with City Press, Nkambule explained that she initiated the awards after traveling across the continent and abroad to observe various award ceremonies. She noted that none of them resonated with her.

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) issued a statement extending condolences to the Nkambule family. The statement praised Mbokazi-Nkambule for providing a platform for gospel artists to be recognized and showcase their talents. It noted that her dedication and love for gospel music had significantly helped many and nurtured the growth of gospel music in South Africa.

Linda Sibiya, a colleague, expressed that the listeners of Ukhozi FM have lost a sister and a spokesperson, while gospel artists have lost a godmother and a nurturing figure. Tributes on social media highlighted her "unwavering dedication, passion, and love for uplifting others."

“It is sad to hear about the passing of Ma Zanele Mbokazi after battling cancer. She embodied innovation and pioneering spirit, especially in the South African gospel space, as well as her efforts in women empowerment,” wrote @kgotsohopelekau on Twitter.

“We will miss her wisdom and guidance. May her out soul rest in peace in the galaxy of brave and courageous leaders who helped to spread the gospel of Christ through her actions.” said Thulani Maseko a community member in Soshanguve

" Her memory will continue to live on, not for what she did on her show but for what she did for the people and gospel artist." said Yolanda Thabethe a second year journalism student at Tshwane University of Technology.
