A historic fight between South African-born fighter Dricus Du Plessis and Nigerian-born Israel Adesanya took place on Sunday, August 18, in Perth, Australia. Dricus secured victory after Adesanya tapped out, ending the match.
Earlier in
January, Dricus had sparked controversy by claiming to be the first to
"take the belts" to Africa after defeating American Sean Strickland
for the middleweight title. His assertion as the first African champion did not
sit well with former Nigerian titleholders Kamaru Usman, Cameroonian Francis
Ngannou, and Nigeria's own Adesanya.

“He is tough and stubborn, that’s what it is. I tried to kick his body then told him to get up the referee told him to get up too, but he just laid down there and took a breath. I told myself that he was done but I was wrong.” Adesanya said on his YouTube channel.”:

The tension between these two fighters began long before they stepped into the ring. Many attribute their rivalry to disagreements over who truly represents the "King of Africa" and the differences in their heritage. After his victory, Dricus became the first South African champion, while Adesanya had previously held the title, adding further fuel to their ongoing dispute.
Dana White, UFC CEO, remarked that it was an impressive and great fight, with both fighters putting on a strong performance. He noted that Dricus has an awkward fighting style, comparing it to a "white guy dancing."

Following the fight, the two fighters showed mutual respect by embracing and shaking hands, despite their heated exchanges in the past months.
People took to
Twitter to celebrate Dricus Du Plessis, who won his third match out of four.
President Cyril Ramaphosa praised him, saying, “Congratulations, Dricus Du
Plessis, on retaining your UFC middleweight world championship with a
submission in #UFC305. As a bonus, you kept our flag flying high hours after
the Springboks secured an historic 2-0 series win in Perth. We couldn’t have
wished for a better day in the office.” said president Cyril Ramaphosa twitter page.

Maseko, a UFC fan, expressed surprise at the results, noting that many had
expected Israel Adesanya to win the title. He admitted that he was also
shocked, given Adesanya’s unique fighting style and his previous success
against many strong opponents. Maseko acknowledged Dricus Du Plessis'
impressive fighting tactics, calling him a "savage," and expressed
his happiness with the outcome. He also mentioned that UFC had promised to
bring another event to South Africa if Dricus won the title, hoping that it
would include a title defense by DDP on home soil.
